Contemporary Abstract Art
"HOPE & LIGHT"
The sky grew dark, the thunder rumbled in the distance, people in the crowd began to run and seek shelter. I stood outside, drenched by the rain, smelled the sweetness of the earth and was ever so aware of the beauty and power of nature. I knew then, I had become an artist.
As a landscape painter, my work is inspired by the natural world, its unity, contrasts and grandeur. Rather than re-create a realistic landscape, I express its’ energy and essence through color and texture with the goal of conveying my experiences and inspiration to my audience. These experiences have enabled me to develop a love for places and things that might otherwise be perceived as commonplace. The theme of all of my paintings is "Hope and Light", the universal gift that all of us possess, even in our darkest hours.
Although I am inspired by the nature around me, I often work from experience and memory. My art is intended to evoke sensation and thought and to stimulate the observer. My colors don’t always come from "color theory", but rather from my sensitivity for and perspective about nature. I often utilize the traditional theory of abstract expressionism in which the physical subject is abandoned for one which is purely emotional. This allows me to express my feelings or ideas solely by means of form, line, or color without direct reference to the subject matter. I use a combination of mediums such as acrylic, wax, metal, wood and paper. My surfaces are highly worked and often have a very weathered appearance. I employ a rather labor-intensive work process in which I layer, add, remove, distress, add and remove again, resulting in a very rich, textural surface.
I work on a large number of canvases concurrently, allowing me to transport strong elements of effective techniques from one piece to the next. Each canvas shares details with the other and is intended to capture different fragments of the landscape’s power resulting in a large body of cohesive work expressing the landscape’s deepest essence. My paintings range from less than one-foot square to works as large as six feet by eight feet, all mixed media.
Influences and inspirations include, Hoffman, Kahn, Mitchell, Picasso, Richter, Rothko and nature. My series are dedicated to the memory of my late mom, Molly, who inspired the first adventure and the love of my life, Richard who supports all of those that have followed.
